Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) slammed President Joe Biden’s trip to Asia on Tuesday. She urged him to cancel the trip while lawmakers negotiate a way to raise the United States’s debt ceiling.
Mace said Biden should be working with lawmakers on a compromise ahead of the June 1 deadline instead of spending seven days in Japan, Australia, and Papua New Guinea.

“Leaving the country right now is not where he should be,” Mace told CNN.
“He should be here, and they should be working something out to balance the budget, rein in spending over the next 10-20 years, something reasonable that both sides can agree to. I think it’s deeply problematic, given the trajectory that we’re on right now and how close we are to [the] June 1 deadline, that the president is traveling out of country.”
Mace said it was important that both sides work together to avoid the economic crisis that would ensue if the U.S. defaults on its loans for the first time in history. The U.S. reached its debt limit in January.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen reaffirmed that Congress needs to raise the debt ceiling by early June to avoid defaulting on loans. She emphasized that every day without a deal negatively affects the U.S. economy.
“The impasse has already increased the debt burden to American taxpayers,” Yellen said at a press conference on Tuesday. “Every single day that Congress does not act, we are experiencing increased economic costs that could slow down the U.S. economy.”

Biden is expected to meet with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) Tuesday afternoon, but an agreement still appears to be in the distance. House Republicans are hoping to raise the debt limit and make some spending cuts, while Biden and other Democrats are hoping for a clean debt ceiling increase.
If the U.S. is unable to meet the June 1 deadline, many government programs, including Social Security and veteran benefits, could be delayed or reduced.
